If you enjoy a good couple in a book/series, then this blog is for you! Now, I don’t personally like only Romance books, so the couples won’t be from just romance genres. Today I’m going to be sharing my top 10 favorite couples from stand-alone books or series. As I’m talking about couples there will be spoilers as most these couples tend to get together toward the ends of the book or series. This is just a blanket warning, so I apologize if something is spoiled for you, but you have been warned. Read at your own risk.
These are in no particular order!
Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin from Harry Potter
I think they are underrated as a couple. One of the biggest reasons is because we don’t get to see them interact very often, mostly due to the books written in Harry’s POV. However, in the moments we get, we get a great storyline of overcoming adversity and you see that they truly do love each other despite all they have going against them. If you don’t know about this couple, Remus is a werewolf and thirteen years older than Tonks. He didn’t think he was a suitable person for her because of his age and his affliction. Werewolves were not allowed to hold jobs, so he also couldn’t provide for her. Not only that, but Lycanthropy can be hereditary, so he didn’t want to have a chance of passing on his affliction if they were to have kids. He felt he would be ruining her life if he let go of all that. Eventually Tonks was able to break through those walls and they fall in love. In the seventh book they eventually get married and have a baby, Teddy Lupin. However, what was an amazingly sweet couple was short lived as both passed away at the battle for Hogwart, leaving their baby in the care of his godfather, Harry Potter.
Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables
The Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery was one of my favorite series as a kid, mostly due to the eccentric lead in Anne Shirley, and Gilbert Blythe. The series was written in 1908, so some themes are a little outdated, but one of the best things about these two is the mutual respect they have for each other. Anne and Gilbert start out as school mates and they are both the smartest in their class, so they are constantly fighting. Which, eventually led them to working together a lot and understanding each other more, and they grew to be friends. After school, Gilbert went to university, taught for two years, and then went to medical school, all the while keeping in touch with Anne and they eventually married. What I mostly love about this couple is how much they respected each other in a time when that wasn’t really a thing. They were each other’s first love and they stayed together through all their hardships, just a really cute sweet couple.
Penny Lee and Sam from Emergency Couple
The characters are the reason I love this book. The book itself is okay, but Penny and Sam are so witty and fun for their circumstances in the book. Sam especially has a lot happen to him, and yet he still has a pretty optimistic outlook on life. Penny Lee is leaving her mother and boyfriend behind as she heads off to college a few hours away from her childhood home. While she is there, she encounters her roommate’s “Uncle” Sam and after a scary encounter they become each other’s “Emergency Contact.” Which really means that they text each other all the time and can talk to each other about their problems. Eventually they grow to be friends and they find that they just talk because they really enjoy each other’s company. Penny wants to become a writer and her POV’s in the book are hilarious. She is a pretty closed off person at first; her interactions with Sam really help her to become much more open. Sam is pretty opposite from the beginning. He’s open and works as a barista/baker, so he always has to be open to people. However, he’s closed off in other ways and that shows through the moments his POV is written in. The two together are sweet and comforting and they really are just two great characters.
Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley from Harry Potter
Honestly, if you know anything about me, you’ll know that this was my favorite couple in books for a long time. I loved the way they bickered throughout the entire series, and when we finally saw Ron realize that he really did like Hermione and try in Deathly Hallows, I was all about it. They just make sense, and I don’t care that J.K. Rowling said that it was a mistake to put them together and that they would probably divorce in the end. I totally disagree with her. If that was the case, they would have already divorced (in The Cursed Child, which by the way I do NOT agree that it is canon, but that’s another story). Anyway, Hermione and Ron just fit they are opposites of each other, but they get along well as they started off as friends. Yes, they fight, but they always become closer for it. They are a fun couple and definitely have good chemistry.
Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark from the Hunger Games
Oh man, Katniss and Peeta are definitely one of my favorite couples. I always talk about them when suggesting a good series to read. Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist of the Hunger Games trilogy, so everything is told through her POV. She is a closed-off person as she has had to grow up very quickly and she doesn’t trust anyone. The only person who she really loves and trusts is her younger sister Primrose, and she is very protective of her. When her sister gets picked as Tribute to go into the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers for her and she is thrown in alongside Peeta Mellark who saved her life a long time ago. At first, she knows she has to kill Peeta so she is indifferent and cold to him at times. After coming to a truce in the games, she opens up and they help each other. They seemingly “fell in love” in the arena and the Capitol loved their story, so when they get out alive the realization of Katniss acting in that way toward him hits, and their relationship sours. However, in the second and third books, they always end up gravitating toward each other and eventually for real do fall in love. Peeta loved Katniss from the beginning and the way he was always patient with her was endearing. He never pushed her for more, and was always there no matter what as support. Katniss did whatever she had to do to get through the games, and then everything afterward, so she never really thought too much about Peeta, but you could tell she very much cared for him. They both knew the other wasn’t perfect and they accepted each other for who they were. They were sweet, respectful of the other, and just a great couple all around.
Baek-Hyeon and Seo Eojin from the Red Palace
Baek-Hyeon, or as she likes to be called Hyeon, and Seo Eojin are thrown together after someone kills four palace ladies at the local nurse academy. Hyeon is a nurse in the Palace and happened upon the scene when curiosity got the better of her. She meets the new Police Inspector, Seo Eojin, there and they begin working on the case together as the Police Commander is convinced it’s one person, and they know it isn’t. What I like about this couple is that despite them being in different “classes” Eojin never once looked down on Hyeon and he respected her knowledge and her in general. It’s pretty obvious early on that Eojin finds her interesting and at first Hyeon is solely focused on the mystery, but soon figures out that she may have more than just friendship feelings toward him. As the book is set in Joseon (Korea) in 1756, it’s a whole different world than we’re used to. Also, if you are a fan of Kdramas this book reads like you’re watching a historical Kdrama. It’s fast paced, and always keeps you guessing. Plus, there are actual historical events in the book along with very well-known historical figures.
Rogue and Gambit from X-Men
This couple is one that took forever to get together in the comics. If you don’t know anything about Marvel or the Comics, Rogue and Gambit are mutants that are a part of the X-Men, which is a team of mutants put together by Professor Xavier who work together to save the world from threats. Rogue’s power is difficult because with just a simple touch she can “steal” other mutant’s powers, and if she touches for too long, they could possibly die. So, she is very wary about touching anyone, including Gambit who is a long time love interest. Gambit loves Rogue very much, but they always have terrible timing, and he’s left a few times to go elsewhere, and so has Rogue. They’re a tragic couple for the fact that for a long time they could never get this right, nor could they touch each other. However, finally in X-Men Gold #30, they get married! This is achieved by a mutant power dampening device and continued work on controlling her powers, in the end it’s because Rogue has to face her fears to gain complete control over her abilities.
Will Solace and Nico di Angelo from The Heroes of Olympus
They are one of my favorite couples mostly because Nico di Angelo is my favorite character in the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus Series. Nico is the son of Hades who had been locked in the Lotus Hotel and Casino for a long time. The hotel is the lair of the lotus eaters and also a place where time stands still. He was placed there around the Second World War and he was there until Percy saved him and his sister Bianca. It isn’t until the fifth book of Percy Jackson and the Olympians that Will and Nico meet. It’s a very short interaction. However, in the Heroes of Olympus we gradually see more interactions with them, and in the Mark of Athena we find out that Nico has had a crush on Percy for a long time, but has since gotten over it as Percy was in love with Annabeth. Will continues to fuss and worry over Nico every time that they see each other, but it isn’t until the Blood of Olympus that we see Nico show any emotion toward Will, and eventually they get together. Throughout the Trials of Apollo series, we continue to see their relationship grow as Will is the son of Apollo and Apollo loves how happy Nico makes his son. They’re just a very cute sweet couple and they make each other very happy. I really just enjoy their interactions and Nico is my favorite character from the series. Their story will probably continue in the newest novel that Riordan has announced for 2023 which will be in Nico’s POV.
Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Percy is obviously the main character from Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but Annabeth Chase is always right there beside him. Percy and Annabeth first meet in the Lightning Thief and at first it doesn’t seem like she likes him very much. This is mostly due to Percy being the son of Poseidon, and Annabeth is the daughter of Athena. So, if you know about the myth of Poseidon and Athena, you might know. If you don’t, well basically Poseidon and Athena were competing to be the Patron Saint of Athens, and Athena won. To get back at her, Poseidon had relations with Medusa in the temple erected in Athena’s honor. So, Athena cursed Medusa and always didn’t like Poseidon after that. So, children of Athena had a natural distrust and dislike of children of Poseidon. Percy has to go on a quest, and Annabeth who had been a camper at Camp Half-Blood since she was seven years old, begged Percy to bring her because he could use her intelligence and she had never been on one. So, he, Annabeth, and Grover go on a quest. Since then, Percy brings her along every time he goes on a quest and eventually in the Last Olympian, Percy realizes he loves her after she is stabbed and nearly killed because of poison. After the battle and everything, Annabeth and Percy finally share a kiss and they begin dating. However, their peace doesn’t last for long because in the first book of the Heroes of Olympus series Percy has vanished and Annabeth is on a war path to figure out what happened. In the Son of Neptune, Percy turns up and ends up going on a quest with some Roman Demi-Gods and eventually Annabeth and him are reunited. Which they go through some more trials and tribulations as that series goes on. What I love about Percy and Annabeth is their obvious love for each other. No matter what they are always supportive and will stick together. Their loyalty is unmatched, and considering all they have gone through, the fact that they finally get a chance at peace and quiet at the end of the Heroes of Olympus is satisfying.
Wanda and Vision from the Avengers
Although this couple doesn’t have a happy ending, I still really enjoy these two, both in the comics and the movies. Wanda Maximoff and the Vision first meet in Avengers #76. Wanda joined the Avengers after working with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Vision joined after he was created to destroy the Avengers by Ultron. Their first meeting was when Wanda was brought into another dimension and Vision did his best to save her and she did her best to protect him. The first spark of chemistry was during the Kree/Skrull war when Wanda made a move, but was initially rejected by Vision, he eventually comes around. From there they had their moments, but Vision proposes and she accepts. They get married, buy a home in 1982’s Vision and the Scarlet Witch where they also have their twin children, Billy and Tommy, they were brought about purely by Wanda’s want. She created the two boys, but they were really missing pieces of the demonic Mephisto, which when returned to him, they ceased to exist. Which happens in West Coast Avengers, and what also happens is the end of Wanda and Vision. They are a tragic couple, but I loved their time together. They were both very unique characters that despite their differences they fell in love and were able to be happy for quite a while, which honestly doesn’t happen much to the mutants of the Marvel universe. A lot of this story can also be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the story is a little different as is most movie/TV adaptations.
